Maintain Your Oral and Overall Health with General Dentistry
Root Canal Therapy
In some cases decay enters the inner chamber and roots of a tooth, and compromises the entire tooth structure. Root canal therapy is often the only way to combat infection and save the tooth. Although root canals have earned a reputation for being painful, in recent years most patients report root canal therapy to be a minimally uncomfortable experience, not so different than a standard filling. During your root canal treatment, you will be made comfortable with a local anesthetic or sedation option, so that the affected tissue can be removed and the inner chambers of the tooth can be disinfected.
Periodontal disease, or gum disease, afflicts a large percentage of Americans. This condition has been associated with increased risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, respiratory conditions, and heart disease. Dr. Palmieri offers diagnostic salivary testing to determine whether a patient is at high risk for gum disease, and to assess which treatment that will be most effective. This may include a change in your home care routine and oral care products, antibiotic therapy, or a deep cleaning, which involves scaling and root planing procedures in our office. For severe periodontitis, surgery may be needed. Gum disease is a chronic condition, but with proper treatment and maintenance, its effects can be reversed and its progress stopped.
TMJ Disorder Treatment
The hinged temporomandibular joints (TMJs) allow the lower jaw to move. When a great deal of pressure is put on these joints or they become damaged in some way, TMJ disorder can develop and lead to a number of symptoms. Patients can suffer from headaches, neck and shoulder pain, ringing in the ears, and other symptoms. Dr. Palmieri treats TMJ disorder by correcting problems with jaw alignment. He can also prescribe an oral appliance to address bruxism, or the teeth grinding which is often associated with TMJ disorder.
If you snore loudly or stop breathing for 10 or more seconds while sleeping, you may have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). While anyone can develop OSA, it often affects people over 50, mostly males and overweight individuals. OSA often occurs when the jaw muscles relax, and soft oral tissues block your airflow. Sleep apnea has been known to contribute to a number of nagging symptoms, ranging from depression to lethargy. Dr. Palmieri can treat OSA with a simple, comfortable oral appliance that holds the lower jaw in its proper position during sleep.
Everyone needs to visit the dentist twice a year, or as directed, for a comprehensive checkup and dental cleaning. A checkup includes an exam of the mouth, including teeth, gums, and soft tissues, and screenings for gum disease and oral cancer. Our dental hygienist will then perform a cleaning to remove plaque, tartar, and debris from your teeth. We can also go over proper flossing and brushing techniques to keep your smile healthy and attractive.
